Accomplished Pitcher Marron Signs With State

December 13, 2021 | Softball

STARKVILLE – After posting eye-popping numbers on the travel ball circuit, Josey Marron signed with Mississippi State softball in November.

Marron attended Northwest High School in Grimes, Iowa, but never played for her school. Iowa is the only state in the nation that plays softball in the summer, and Marron opted to compete on the travel circuit instead, pitching for Iowa Premier Fastpitch.

She was ranked No. 39 in the class by Extra Innings Softball and is the No. 17 pitcher nationally. Over three full travel seasons, she never allowed an opponent's batting average higher than .188.

"Josey is a special pitcher that has won a lot of premier games at the travel ball level," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "She is a calm competitor with a steady demeanor and has an elite mix of pitches that will help her to succeed at the next level."

So far in her senior year, Marron has thrown 58.0 innings with 101 strikeouts. As a junior she posted a 0.89 WHIP with 504 punch outs over 350.0 innings. That was also good for a 1.70 ERA and helped her team post a top-10 finish at the Alliance Nationals and a top-five finish at the Colorado Sparkler.

In 2019, Iowa Premier finished inside the top five at the PGF Nationals and the Colorado Sparkler. She struck out 399 batters over 242.0 innings with a 1.80 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in what equated to her sophomore campaign.

"Josey is a dynamic pitcher who can work up and down and adds a plus change up," assistant coach Josh Johnson added. "She's extremely accurate and has thrown big innings for a big team. She will be battle tested and a great fit here."

As a freshman, she struck out 354 hitters in 284.0 innings with a 1.77 ERA. Academically, she earned honors in all four years of high school. She comes from an athletic family that includes aunts who played soccer at Florida and both hockey and softball at St. Kate's.

"I chose Mississippi State because I loved the dynamic of the coaching staff and the close-knit family feel of not only the softball program, but the school and town as a whole," Marron said. "The pride that both current MSU students and alumni take in their school is unmatched, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to be a part of that."

Mississippi State softball signed six student-athletes on National Signing Day on Nov. 10. State's class was ranked No. 17 by Extra Innings Softball, the highest-ranked class under Ricketts. Five of the six signees were ranked among the nation's top 100 players. The Bulldogs will continue to release an in-depth look at each signee throughout the month of December.
